Promoting Positive Mental Health
In EGS, we have become acutely aware of the bewildering array of issues which confront our students on a daily basis. Over the past few years it has also become increasingly clear that we are, as a society, in the midst of a mental health crisis of sorts. We aren’t going to diagnose or solve the problems of the world here, but we have begun to take a few tentative steps towards making EGS a better place to have strong, positive mental health.
Promoting Positive Mental Health
Last November, we hosted a School Leadership conference looking at this issue. Over the intervening months, we have begun to explore (i) what we already do to help our students manage their mental health and (ii) how we might continue to improve the resources and skills available to our young people. Our students – from those undertaking Wellbeing in 1st Year, the FRIENDS programme in 2nd Year or the Student Council – are starting to take greater ownership of this issue and are promoting it throughout and around the School.
Resilience
The theme for this year has been Resilience – being durable and being persistent and not giving up. In assemblies, as well as whenever we get the chance, we are encouraging our students to stick with it when things get tough, and to recognise and reward our students when we see them demonstrating resilience. Whole School GuidanceĀ
We are incredibly fortunate in EGS to have an incredibly talented, dedicated and compassionate staff. Our pastoral care team – from the Form Teachers, through our remarkable year heads, to the SPHE team, the Guidance Counsellor and the SEN team – take the most amazing care of our students. Our recently renewed Whole School Guidance Plan is a comprehensive look at this system.
